Ueno Park has several major museums within a few minutes' walk of each other. Choose the one that interests you most, then leave time for a walk towards Yushima.
Which museum should you choose?
| Museum | Go here for |
|---|---|
| Tokyo National Museum | Japanese art and cultural treasures |
| National Museum of Western Art | Western paintings and sculpture |
| National Museum of Nature and Science | Nature, science and discovery |
One museum is enough for a relaxed visit. If you want to see another, come back on a different day of your stay.
Before you go
Check the museum's own website for opening days, last admission and tickets. Special exhibitions often need a separate ticket from the permanent collection, and closing days can change around public holidays.
Save your ticket and the location of the entrance on your phone. Photography rules differ between rooms and exhibitions, so look for the signs inside.
A plan for the day
Spend the morning in the museum you chose. Have lunch or coffee, then take a short walk through Ueno Park if the weather is pleasant.
From the Shinobazu Pond side of the park, you can carry on towards Yushima. Yushima Tenmangu, also known as Yushima Tenjin, is an old shrine that makes a quiet last stop. Skip this outdoor part in heavy rain or strong heat.
In summer, make the museum the main part of the day and keep the walk short. Bring water and leave time for a break.
Make use of a longer stay
Save another collection for a free afternoon or a rainy day, and check the calendar again each time you go.
LOHUS homes at Ueno Park are in Yushima, a few minutes' walk from the park, Shinobazu Pond and the shrine.
