Finding a Tokyo Gym for a Short Stay

You can exercise in Tokyo without signing up for a long membership. For a short stay, look first for a visitor pass or a public sports centre.

A visitor pass

Look for ビジター (visitor) or 都度利用 (pay per visit) on a gym's website.

For example, Gold's Gym Yotsuya Tokyo lists:

  • a visitor pass at ¥3,300 including tax, for one visit of up to five hours
  • a 10-day travellers' pass at ¥11,000 including tax, with some conditions and some branches excluded

Visitors from overseas are asked to show a passport or residence card. Check the current terms for the branch (in Japanese) before you go.

A discounted trial is not the same as a visitor pass. Some trials are only for people who are thinking of joining, so check that you are eligible.

Public sports centres

Public facilities are another option, and they often cost less. Shinjuku Sports Center (in Japanese) has a training room and a swimming pool that individuals can use at set times. Look at the timetable for individual use, and ask whether you need a first-time session or registration.

Fees and eligibility can differ for residents and visitors, and one ticket does not always cover every activity.

What should you bring?

  • identification, if the gym asks for it
  • exercise clothes and a towel
  • indoor sports shoes, which most gyms require
  • a way to pay that the gym accepts

Ask about lockers, shoe rental and towel rental. If you have tattoos, check the gym's policy before you visit.

Before you buy a monthly membership

Confirm the joining fee, the minimum contract period, the payment method and the cancellation deadline. Ask how to cancel before you leave Japan.

Choose somewhere easy to reach from your apartment. For a few sessions, visitor passes are usually simpler than a monthly plan with cancellation paperwork.

Prices checked in October 2026. Please confirm them on the official pages before you go.
